Green Access

The impact of climate change and the green agenda, and its relationship to disabled people’s equality and access needs, is yet to be explored in great detail, and therefore a largely unknown area.

What are the implications?

  • Possible issues may include changes to transport systems, energy and power, natural disasters, and ‘green’ building developments.  For people with mobility impairments using motability cars or scooters, rising fuel prices, specific ‘car taxes’ or power shortages could reduce the ability to make use of these.  Natural disaster evacuation plans, recycling schemes and green building development initiatives such as eco towns, may not accommodate disabled people’s access needs.

Moving Forward

  • How does the green agenda relate to disabled people and accessibility in your area?  Are you a green organisation? Do you save energy, minimise waste and recycle?
  • What green initiatives are relevant in your area? Are there plans for ‘Eco Town’ developments or carbon neutral initiatives? Have disabled people been consulted on these issues?  How will accessibility be managed?
  • What impact would an ‘energy drought’ have on your organisation?
  • Are you in an area at risk of natural disaster? What are the evacuation plans? How do these accommodate disabled people?
